Chapter 3

We are not ‘fucked’, as you so eloquently put it, Stephen. We are just in a…predicament. One of many that has happened and will happen at our Antarctic facility.

Shit, did I say that out loud? Pull yourself together, Steve.

“Now, what do we do?”

Zoe was beside herself with excitement and fear, capering and clapping her hands together.

"We capture it, of course! What an advancement for science—the first polar bear in the Antarctic. No one will believe it!"

"That is exactly why we can't capture it," Tahlia cut in. "No one would believe it. Not to mention the logistical challenge of feeding a polar bear. Its mass is such that it requires – Zoe?”

“About 50 kilograms of seal fat per sitting,” Zoe calculated, looking crestfallen.

"I also doubt we have anywhere sufficiently bear-proof to house the largest land predator on Earth. Unless either of you disagree?"

Zoe's eyes filled with tears, but she nodded, as did I.

"So, what then?" I asked.

"Please don't kill it," Zoe pleaded. "Please, please."

"I wasn't suggesting that," said Tahlia gently. "I don't think there's much to be gained from killing it. But it does need to move. The Dive Room is a central hub for the station, and I'd sleep easier knowing a polar bear isn't about to murder us in our sleep - the door is human-proof, not bear-proof, and it’s bound to get out eventually, if it can smell, well…food. No, we have to drive it away."

"Drive it away?" I asked, incredulous.

"Yes, Steve, drive it away. It had to have come from somewhere. I'm hoping that by driving it out of the facility, the bear might give us some clues as to where it came from. The only question is how. If only we had something that could match it - but what could match 400 kilograms of fur, flesh, and fighting spirit? What else has muscles as bulging, a musk so…fierce…"

Tahlia’s eyes flicked to my biceps, and I gulped. She wasn’t seriously going to suggest -

"I have an idea," said Zoe, her face contemplative. "But Steve, you're not going to like it."

When had I ever liked one of Zoe’s plans? Apart from those related to ‘conserving heat’.

"You know, my background is in fairly… experimental research with animals," Zoe continued. "It's part of the reason I've been posted to this rock."

"Zoe, you can't ask this of Steve," Tahlia interjected. "It's unproven."

"Unproven, yes, but also our best chance. We can't leave it on the loose, and we can't face a raging Ursus maritimus ourselves. No, we need a bit of help. From science!" Zoe said, her eyes glowing with a fervent glee that made me shiver. "We will, however, need a decoy. And, since it's my plan, I volunteer-"

"No!" Tahlia cut in. "Zoe, you're much too weak. Besides, this is my facility, my bear, my problem. I'll be the decoy. I need you here, Zoe. Man the comm systems. Coordinate us. Now, what exactly do we have to do, Zoe?"

Zoe glanced between us, a shy smile breaking across her elfin features.
